Instructions

You should have two Favorites on your Links toolbar (if it's shown) and also in a folder called GRged. If they're not there, add them by right-clicking on the links below and choosing "Add to Favorites". This only works with Internet Explorer.

You may be warned that the Favorites aren't safe. This is because they include a bit of code to capture the details of the person who's currently selected in the tree and Favorites don't usually contain code.

  1. Log into Genes Reunited in Internet Explorer.
  2. Run GRged, then choose "My Trees" from the "Genes Reunited" menu.
  3. Find the person you want to be the root of the export.
  4. Choose the "Select Root Relative" item in your Favorites. If you're asked to allow access to the clipboard, do so.
  5. Click the "Paste" button in GRged.
  6. Choose an individual you don't want to appear in your export and click on them.
  7. Click the "Exclude Person" item in your Favorites. You may be asked whether to allow access to the clipboard. If so, please allow it.
  8. Click the "Paste" button to add the exclusion in GRged.
  9. Repeat the previous three steps for any other individuals you want to exclude.
  10. Optionally, choose to preview the data if you want to tweak it before writing the GEDCOM file.
  11. Specify a filename.
  12. Click "Create", sit back and wait!
  13. If you chose to preview the data, you can use the different grids to clean-up the data manually. This is particularly useful for place names, as different people like to note these in different ways!
  14. All done! Your GEDCOM file is generated. Use it to import the people and families into your family tree software.
